American flight controllers are more and more looking for second jobs and calling in sick, as they remain on duty unpaid amid the government shutdown, the transport chief has stated.

"The controllers are becoming strained," the official informed a news outlet on Sunday, as some flights were halted on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

After the government shut down on October 1st, air traffic controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were told to continue performing their duties uncompensated.

But some have been absent, causing airports to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has added to delays due to climate and additional factors.

Over 3,000 American flights were delayed on Sunday, and the secretary said he anticipates the situation to grow worse.

"I observe the stress," Duffy said in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, adding that he had spoken to multiple professionals to hear their concerns firsthand.

"They are pursuing second jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I work for Uber, can I find another source of income to make ends meet?'" he added.

The secretary added that on the previous day 22 alerts at airports indicated flights would be held up due to a lack of workers - among the peak since the shutdown began.

The US government shutdown reached its 26th day on the weekend, making it the second-longest shutdown in the past.

Duffy has consistently cautioned that flight authorities would slow down the number of aircraft in the sky if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his interview, he declined to respond directly when asked if it was safe to fly in the US, and instead made a direct appeal to controllers.

"I need my controllers concentrating on the flight paths, not on the finances at their households," Duffy stated.

On Sunday, certain flights were stopped at LAX due to staffing shortages, causing disruption at the fifth-busiest terminal in the country and one of the busiest in the world, as well as additional travel stretching north to the metropolis of Oakland, California.

The Federal Aviation Administration alert went out at 8:45 AM in the morning on Sunday. Many flights were back on schedule by midday.

Flights at Newark Liberty International Airport, though, were delayed an mean of 82 minutes due to staffing shortages, and the FAA said DFW, the second most active airport in the country, could experience difficulties from reduced staff in the afternoon.

The FAA advised travelers in California to consult carriers about updated departure times.

The issue comes ahead of the third match of the championship, which is due to be played in LA on Monday night, and about one month before the Thanksgiving holiday, among the peak times to fly in the United States.

Strain on US air travel contributed to ending a federal closure in two thousand nineteen. Back then, the halt had reached its fifth week and disrupted airline operations, including aviator instruction.
