Sir Gareth Southgate has declared that he is avoiding a return to football management, explaining that it would be challenging to match the special mission he felt as head of the Three Lions.

He expressed his intention to focus his energy toward engaging young people and combating what he described as a widespread pessimistic outlook now found in the country.

Pursuing New Avenues Outside of Football

During a broadcast discussion, he was asked about rumors linking him with available jobs in the English football and elsewhere.

“My role with England was not just a job—it was a mission representing my nation,” he replied. “It will be tough to match that experience. After nearly four decades in the game, I’m now exploring new fields where I can contribute positively.”

Dedication to Mentorship

Leading up to the publication of his upcoming book, Dear England: Lessons in Leadership, he emphasized that he is deeply committed about providing role models for young people, applying lessons from his tenure as England’s men’s football manager from 2016 and 2024, as well as his experiences as a parent.

The leader believes that his time coaching England, during which the team shifted from being widely disliked to broadly loved, holds wider relevance.

“We had a huge disconnect with the public when we started,” he explained. “Many perceived the squad as arrogant, but we managed to change that perception. I witnessed firsthand how the team could unite individuals from all backgrounds.”

Parenting and Guiding Young People

Reflecting on his role as a parent, he observed: “You want to give your kids the best possible start, but there is a point when they don’t want to listen to parents any more. I experienced that in my house in the same way everybody else will … but I do think this is an important space for us.”

He went on: “A downbeat tone surrounds the nation now, and it’s essential to provide hope and advice to the younger generation. While talent abounds, accessing suitable mentors and peer networks is crucial, since these factors heavily influence lifelong outcomes.”

Unity Over Division

Southgate stressed that “there is more that unites us [in the UK] than divides us” but that the societal attention often emphasizes conflict.

“One can see why many feel disillusioned,” he commented. “Many areas face economic hardship, which naturally inspires demands for improvement. However, I’ve experienced the power of national unity. In the Covid crisis, acts of community support showed the country at its finest, proving our resilience when challenged.”

Southgate’s upcoming publication, the book Dear England, is set to provide deeper reflections on guidance and country pride inspired by his remarkable time in football.
