Information Available Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident
No fewer than 16 individuals lost their lives and more than 40 sustained injuries when assailants opened fire at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have called a terrorist attack.
In the latest update, officials have announced the death toll is 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were taken to medical facilities.
Those who died have not yet been officially identified, but police believe their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.
Below are the individuals who have been named so far.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Known as a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.
She described the moments leading up to the attack, explaining they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement read.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, as per reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.
In a message, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
