Weather experts are saying an icy start to the new year, with snow likely throughout a lot of the UK. Those celebrating have been told to bundle up as bitterly cold temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Plans Proceed Despite Alerts

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay festivities are set to take place, following last year's cancellation. This proceeds amid weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so extra layers will be needed," noted the national forecaster.

Fireworks Under Clear but Chilly Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is set to be ideal for fireworks shows, with dry conditions and open skies. Temperatures are forecast to be low, meaning warm wraps essential, according to forecasters.

To the north, conditions will be more overcast, but this is not expected to hamper visibility for watching fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Extensive Weather Alerts for New Year's Day

As we enter Friday, weather warnings are active across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• The public have been urged to plan for delays for trips on the road.
• Delays and cancellations are likely on trains and buses.

The Mercury Forecast to Fall Further

Going into the new year, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to fall even more as wintry showers and strong winds are expected to affect the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow is expected to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Medical Warnings Released

Meanwhile, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with readings likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials explained this signified the weather could to cause significant impacts across medical and care provision. This includes a likely increase in the mortality rate among those with health conditions or those in the older age groups.

The advice for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in security, preparing for winter conditions is utterly key.
