New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that became a focal point during his election bid.

A Traditional Abode

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for most New York City mayors after the mid-20th century.

However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central issue, hesitated to declare he would live there immediately following his triumph in November.

"This decision came down to the security of my family and the importance of directing my full attention on implementing the affordability agenda the city's residents elected me on," stated Mamdani in his announcement.

A Fond Farewell

He resided in Astoria, Queens, a community famous for its abundance of immigrant populations and culinary diversity.

"To Astoria: many thanks for showing us the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"While I may no longer live in Astoria, it will continue to reside a part of me and my work," he affirmed.

A Contentious Issue

During his race for mayor, Mamdani linked his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.

Yet his opponents, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the apartment despite the fact that he is from a well-known family.

A House Not Always Used

Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his time in office, which ended in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a place for official events, and championed significant upgrades of the aging mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment a stark contrast to his previous Astoria home.

With its butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.

Within, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed consistent with the home's early 19th-century origins.

The estate, which is said to has five bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city imposes caps on how much property owners can increase rent each year.

City residents view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the cost of housing rises faster than the average income.

It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the property website Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
