Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters
A recent study reveals that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using these medications need to be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists point out that people who lose weight through dieting usually see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.
The struggle is compounded if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Use
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural support.
