Suspected Bondi Beach Gunmen Operated Alone and Did Not Preparation in the Southeast Asian Nation, Police Confirm.

The pair of accused attackers responsible for the deadly incident at a Jewish gathering on Bondi Beach, resulting in 15 lives, are believed to have acted alone, per national law enforcement.

Authorities further stated that Sajid Akram, 50, and his 24-year-old son Naveed Akram travelled to the Philippines on 1 November. Their travel plans included landing in the main city Manila before transiting that same day to Davao City. The pair returned to Sydney on 29 November.

Lack of Proof of Planning During Trip

Authorities have stated the pair did not receive any form of attack-related instruction or "logistical preparation" during their visit in the Philippines. Early findings from local officials indicate they "mostly stayed in" their accommodation.

The attack—described as Australia's most severe firearm massacre since 1996—has been formally declared a act of terrorism.

"We are actively analyzing the material," she said, noting that preliminary reviews indicate that "the alleged offenders are alleged to have acted alone."

National law enforcement Chief Krissy Barrett informed the press on Tuesday that surveillance material tracking the alleged gunmen's movements in the Philippines had been handed over to Australian authorities.

"Our investigation shows no evidence to indicate these suspects were part of a larger terrorist cell, or were directed by overseas entities to perpetrate an act of violence," she said.

However, the duo were also not necessarily in the Philippines as tourists, she noted. She emphasized that, since the probe is continuing, fresh information might surface.

Inspiration and Legal Charges

Earlier, Australian leader Anthony Albanese remarked it seems both accused gunmen were "inspired by ISIS" ideology.

During the incident, Sajid Akram was fatally shot by police. He and his son Naveed—equipped with firearms—allegedly targeted attendees at the Hanukkah celebration.

Naveed Akram, who was injured and taken to hospital after the shooting, has been charged with 59 charges. These include 15 counts of murder and one count of carrying out a terrorist act. He is expected to appear in court in April.

Travel Details

In the wake following the shooting, immigration officials in the Philippines indicated that the older suspect had entered the country using an foreign passport, while his son used an domestic passport.

The pair had declared the metropolis of Davao as their final destination. Their pre-arranged journey back to Australia was for Sydney.
