The British driver Lando Norris Wins Maiden F1 World Championship in Abu Dhabi In Spite Of Max Verstappen's Grand Prix Win.

Through an exhibition of gutsy driving, Lando Norris has clinched his maiden Formula One world championship by securing a podium finish at the season finale in Abu Dhabi. That finish was sufficient for the British driver, despite the fact that his rival Max Verstappen took the victory and his teammate at McLaren Oscar Piastri came home in second.

Being so fast in only his third season in F1, with seven wins, remains very impressive.

Verstappen was also exceptional to force the title battle to the wire. He did all he could in Abu Dhabi with the win, but after fighting back from a significant deficit mid-season, he fell just short of having the points to catch Norris, ending up just two points short.

Sealing the Deal with Clinical Execution

He secured his success with ruthless precision to take the championship that had been within reach but eluded him as McLaren found themselves floundering at the previous two races. These included a DSQ in Las Vegas and then an egregious strategy call in Qatar.

It was a significant accomplishment for the 26-year-old in his seventh season in F1, each one with McLaren. He stuck with the squad even during tough periods, believing they would come good. That belief was vindicated in Abu Dhabi.

He has done a remarkable job to stick at his goal, maintaining his cool and belief during periods under the cosh. After losing the lead to Piastri after Saudi Arabia, he still worked at maximising what he could.

The Title-Deciding Grand Prix

In the race, Verstappen held his first place through turn one, but the three title leaders kept it clean. Piastri, starting on the hard tyre, was feisty and made a brilliant move to go round the outside of Norris to claim second place.

This demonstrated the McLarens were free to race, but put Norris under threat from Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. Early pit visits saw Norris emerge in traffic, but he passed rivals quickly and displayed no signs of nerves in his race craft.

During the race, he made an incredibly bold move to dive past two cars in one swoop, moving up to fourth and closing on Verstappen's teammate. Red Bull told their driver to hold up Norris, which resulted in a dramatic assault where Norris burst up the inside, almost leaving the track.

This moment was investigated by the stewards, with several impossibly tense laps elapsing before a penalty for his rival and no further action for Norris settled the matter. This bold move without being held up was crucial to his championship bid.

Diverging Fortunes

As Norris was crowned the first British driver to win the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, the contrast in fortunes between the two was pronounced. As the young guns battled over the title, Hamilton, the veteran, could only finish eighth place in Abu Dhabi, a dismal conclusion to a difficult season with Ferrari.

His first season with the Italian team had been met by enthusiasm but has yielded what was comfortably his most challenging year ever, finishing sixth in the championship without a top-three finish. He has looked jaded in the final rounds and will aim to rebuild over the off-season.
