The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.
Price was best known for his defined forms and performative fashion, including the soft-colored suits that featured in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."
Price's death comes less than a month after he presented his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Lasting Legacy
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in menswear at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by looks from model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in designing form-fitting garments established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as several ensembles for her US tour following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
