The Lions of Teranga's Emerging Star Lamine Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Afcon Favourites.
As I walk into the room, Lamine Camara grabs a soccer ball he won’t let go of until after the conversation. It’s a powerful visual metaphor for a ambition he has never let slip. “My sole focus was football; my mind was set on nothing else,” remarks this Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His determination and natural ability won over clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the most difficult person to convince didn't come from a sporting director or manager, but his own father. “He was against me to play football but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.
Surmounting Initial Obstacles
In time, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to chase his path in the sport. Another challenge was his small stature, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from giving him a contract.
However, Génération Foot – the institution that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After he earned the best player in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “astonished” to discover he was without a contract. They moved fast. “They took me directly to the academy. They didn’t want me from going back home,” Camara said.
An Unforgettable Year and Continental Breakthrough
That decision set him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his nation to the title and being named player of the tournament.
Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” says the 21-year-old. He resides alone in Europe, a choice his family encourage to keep him focused.
Influences and On-Field Identity
Distractions aren't a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and exceptional skills. Additionally, he's a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and accuracy from dead-ball situations are notable assets. He admits a need to temper his aggression, after being sent off early in his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he quips.
Monaco, Teammates and Future Goals
At Monaco, he values the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” Camara noted.
Right now, his focus is squarely on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England on their soil…,” he says, pointing to a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.
On a potential transfer to the English top flight, he is committed to Monaco at present. “I am very at ease here,” he insists. He is often teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, but is serious about winning the main Africa Player of the Year in the future.
“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England in their own country… it gives you confidence.”
Moving forward, this talented midfielder blends humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions as he aims to guide Senegal to continental glory and build his own lasting legacy in the game.
