While Swimmers Escaped Danger, Viral Image Depicts Rescuer Running ‘All Out’ Towards the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent inhabitant of Bondi, describes the iconic shoreline as her own backyard. On a recent Sunday evening, she, similar to other neighbors, heard loud noises echoing through the suburb.

“We all thought the same, but I considered it was too light and no one could see them,” she explains. Exiting her residence, she witnessed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The looks they wore made it clear trouble had occurred.

As she stood on the road, talking to a couple who had hurried up the hill in their swimwear, she became aware of someone moving up behind her. It was a beach patrol officer, running at full speed towards Bondi barefoot from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while holding a defibrillator.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I only caught a glimpse of this blur of blue,” she recounts. “He was just flying past. He was alone running in the opposite way that all the others was trying to escape from, while holding that large equipment and unshod … He’s running at something that certainly every fibre in your being would instruct you to go in the other direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just fully full throttle running.”

A Powerful Moment of Heroism In the Wake of Tragedy

The photograph Ching captured of the rescuer, since identified as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as among numerous instances of valour in the wake of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, another beach safety officer, explained that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to support the other members at Bondi, as well as to work with emergency personnel, law enforcement and ambulance crews treating many those hurt.

Collective Response and Assistance

Doolan’s actions was part of a broader narrative to come out of the neighbourhood, with the lifeguard clubhouse next to the site of the incident transforming into a makeshift treatment center. It was shared that colleagues were also seen helping out, for instance entering the surf to rescue people needing help.

In the days after the events, statements of support flooded in. An online statement conveyed thanks for the responders who demonstrated that “compassion will always conquer hatred”.

The team of lifeguards issued a statement, saying they were “coming to terms with what happened”.

“We are grateful all for your supportive messages and solidarity. We are overwhelmed by the compassion for our personnel,” the organization commented. “When ready, we will tell our tales in the aim that it aids those impacted.”

Council Commendation

Waverley council, the administrative organization that oversees many professional lifeguards, said that the team rose to the occasion from the instant the incident commenced through to late that nighttime.

“There have been so many powerful narratives, but the viral picture of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help assist the injured is extraordinary,” commented a local official.

“These individuals show dedication every day in maintaining the safety of our iconic coastlines safe for surfers and swimmers, but what we saw on that evening should be celebrated.

“During this time of sorrow and grapple with the atrocity of this violent and horrific tragedy, I think it is vital that we focus on just how much good we have seen in the midst of such darkness.”
